How to Train for an Ultramarathon: 50K to 100 Miles
A marathon training plan will get you to 26.2 miles. It will not get you to 50K, 50 miles, or 100 miles — and treating an ultra like "a marathon plus a bit more" is one of the fastest ways to end up in a medical tent. Ultra training isn't a scaled-up version of marathon training; it's a different sport built around a different currency: time on feet, not pace.
This guide walks through how ultra training actually differs from road marathon training, how to structure a build from your first 50K to a 100-mile race, and the fueling and pacing lessons most ultrarunners learn the hard way.
The Distances, and What Each One Demands
Ultra distances don't scale linearly. Doubling the distance more than doubles the demands, because fatigue, fueling failures, sleep deprivation, and terrain compound over time in ways a marathon never has to contend with.

A 50K is, roughly, a hard trail marathon with an extra 5 miles — most reasonably fit marathoners can finish one off marathon training alone. Everything past that requires training changes that have nothing to do with getting faster: your body and mind need practice functioning while exhausted, under-fed, and — at 100 miles — awake through the night.
The key insight: marathon training optimizes for a fast finish over a known, fixed distance. Ultra training optimizes for still functioning — physically and mentally — after your body wants to stop. Past 50 miles, the winner is rarely the fittest runner in the field; it's the one who paced conservatively, ate on schedule, and didn't quit at hour 14 when everything felt wrong.
Why Ultra Training Is Different From Marathon Training
Three things separate ultra preparation from marathon preparation, and all three of them get underestimated by strong marathoners moving up in distance for the first time.
Time on Feet Replaces Pace
Marathon plans are built around goal pace. Ultra plans are built around hours of continuous movement, because most ultra terrain — technical trail, significant elevation gain, mud, altitude — makes pace an unreliable target. A training week is measured in hours, not miles, and a long run is prescribed as "6 hours moving" rather than "20 miles."
Hiking Is Part of the Plan, Not a Failure
On climbs steep enough that hiking is faster than a jog — or barely slower — elite ultrarunners hike deliberately. Practicing power-hiking with poles on hills during training isn't giving up on running; it's the single most efficient way to conserve energy for distances beyond 50K, and something a road marathon plan never teaches.
Terrain and Vert Matter More Than Distance
A flat 50-mile race and a mountainous 50-mile race with 10,000 feet of climbing are barely comparable events. If your goal race has significant elevation gain, your training needs vertical gain of its own — running fitness built entirely on flat roads will not transfer to steep, technical climbs and, more importantly, the quad-destroying descents that follow them.
The Back-to-Back Long Run
This is the single biggest structural difference between marathon and ultra plans. Rather than one long run per week, ultra training uses back-to-back long runs on consecutive days — for example, a 4-hour run on Saturday followed by a 2–3 hour run on Sunday, both on tired legs.
The goal isn't volume for its own sake — it's teaching your body to keep moving efficiently on legs that are already fatigued, which is exactly the state you'll be in from roughly the halfway point of any ultra onward. A single long run, however long, can't replicate that; only running again the next day, still sore, can.
Start smaller than feels necessary. A first back-to-back weekend might be 2 hours Saturday and 1 hour Sunday. Build the second day's duration gradually — the adaptation comes from repeated exposure to running on fatigued legs, not from any single heroic weekend.
Managing Training Load Across a Long, Uneven Build
Ultra training blocks run 4–7 months, with weekly hours that can swing dramatically — a 10-hour training week is common, and race-specific weekends can spike well past that. Tracking training load matters more here than in any other endurance discipline, because the danger isn't a single hard session; it's an accumulating fatigue debt that's easy to miss until it becomes an overuse injury or illness.
Watch your form score (fitness minus fatigue) closely during the build phase. Ultra athletes who chase big back-to-back weekends without letting fatigue recover in between are the most common overtraining case we see — the weekly long run makes the fitness score climb, but if fatigue never comes back down, form keeps sliding and the next big weekend is being built on top of a deficit rather than a base.
The Four-Phase Structure, Adapted for Ultras
Ultra plans follow the same base–build–peak–taper skeleton as any endurance plan, but the proportions shift, and cutback weeks become non-negotiable rather than optional.
Base Phase (45–55% of the plan)
Aerobic volume build, hiking and vert practice on race-relevant terrain, and — for 100-mile builds — the first easy night runs to get comfortable moving in the dark. Every third or fourth week should be a deliberate cutback week (30–40% less volume) to let the accumulated fatigue actually clear; skipping cutback weeks is the single most common cause of an ultra build falling apart before race day.
Build Phase (25–30% of the plan)
Back-to-back long runs become the centerpiece of the week, progressively lengthening toward race-day time on feet. Race-simulation gear and nutrition testing happens here, not in the final weeks — you want failure points to show up in training, with weeks left to fix them.
Peak Phase (2–4 weeks)
The longest back-to-back weekend of the entire block, typically 3–4 weeks from race day. For 100-mile builds, this is also where a genuine overnight run — even just 3–4 hours starting at midnight — pays off more than almost any other single session.
Taper (2–3 weeks for 50K/50 mile, 3–4 weeks for 100K/100 mile)
Volume drops sharply while short, race-pace-adjacent efforts keep legs sharp. Ultra tapers run longer than marathon tapers because the accumulated fatigue from months of back-to-back long runs takes longer to shed — cutting the taper short is a common way to arrive at the start line still carrying weeks-old fatigue.
Race Nutrition and Hydration: The Skill That Decides Ultras
More ultra finishes are lost to fueling failure than to fitness shortfalls. Past marathon distance, your body needs a steady intake of carbohydrate, electrolytes, and fluid to keep functioning — and the gut's ability to absorb food while running is itself a trainable skill.
- Target 60–90g of carbohydrate per hour once races run past 3–4 hours, split across gels, chews, and real food from aid stations. Practice this exact rate on long training runs — race day is the worst time to discover your stomach rejects a gel you've never tried.
- Plan electrolyte intake independently of thirst. Sodium losses through hours of sweating compound in ways that thirst alone won't signal, especially in hot or high-altitude races.
- Rehearse your drop-bag and aid-station routine. Knowing exactly what you'll grab, eat, and change at each stop saves minutes that add up over 100 miles — and prevents the aid-station paralysis that costs far more time than it should.
- Have a plan for when eating stops working. Nearly every ultrarunner hits a low where nothing sounds appealing. Knowing in advance what you'll force down anyway — often something bland and simple — is the difference between a rough patch and a DNF.
Common Ultra Training Mistakes
- Just running a bigger marathon plan. More miles at marathon pace doesn't prepare you for hiking climbs, running in the dark, or eating on the move — train the specific demands of the distance, not just its length.
- Skipping cutback weeks. Continuous volume increases without recovery weeks is how ultra training blocks end in stress fractures and illness rather than start lines.
- Never testing gear and nutrition in training. New shoes, new gels, or a new hydration vest on race day is a gamble every experienced ultrarunner eventually learns to stop taking.
- Undertrained descents. Climbing fitness gets the attention, but the quad damage from long, steep descents is what actually ends most ultras — descend regularly in training, not just climb.
